I cannot claim my username
Why a username might be rejected and what to do.

It is already taken
Usernames are first come first served. If the handle is held by another active user, pick a different one.
It is reserved
A short list of system names like auth, dashboard, api, claim and admin are reserved and cannot be claimed.
It breaks the rules
Usernames are three to twenty characters, lowercase letters, numbers, underscores or hyphens. At least one letter or number is required.
