What does "An admin recently revoked this account" mean?

When you try to register a username and see "An admin recently revoked this account. Its username will return to the pool and be claimable in X hours.", the name belonged to an existing account that an admin removed. The username is not gone forever. It becomes free to register again when the hours shown run out.

An admin reviewed the account and revoked it for 1 of these reasons.

It broke the Terms of Service.

It was inactive.

It was suspected of username hoarding, meaning someone held the name without planning to use it.

It was never customized, so it only sat on the username.

Revoked accounts are kept for 120 hours in case the owner gets it restored. During that window the username stays reserved. The number of hours in the message is how much of that window is left. After it ends, the old account is deleted automatically and the username returns to the pool.

Come back to the signup page after the hours shown have passed and register the name like any other username. Nobody needs to release it by hand. If someone else registers it first, it will no longer be available, and reserved username licences still apply.
